Sympathetically restored farmhouse, dating from the 18th Century, containing many unusual features, situated outside a medieval village in northern Italy
The House The house is a fully and sympathetically restored farmhouse, dating from the 18th Century, containing many unusual features, situated outside the medieval village of Priero in Piemonte, Northern Italy just south of the Barolo wine region. The property is secluded, being set in the sloping hollow of a hill and has 12 acres (5 hectares) of land surrounding it. It is south-facing and has views of the Alps and the heavily-wooded Piemonte countryside. The house comprises a large kitchen with an arch through to the brick-vaulted dining room (a converted cowshed). Also on the ground floor is a large wet-room and a brick-vaulted boot-room corridor leading to the wine cellar (which was the original part of the house and which remains completely original). Upstairs on the first floor, there is a high-beamed living room (formerly a grain store) with 2 glass-covered grain shafts down to the dining room. The living room leads out onto the covered barn area. There are 3 bedrooms and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. On the second floor, there is a bedroom, and a bathroom with walk-in shower plus a washing area containing a stone sink next to 4 triangular dove-cot windows. This leads on to the master bedroom which has high ceilings, very large full-width French windows with views over the front garden, a large bed (made from an Indian temple door) and a copper bath. Off the bedroom is a study with leather sofa, antique writing desk and bookshelves plus cupboard created from an original set of doors in the house. The front of the house opens directly onto a large garden with mature trees and vegetation. There is a fresh-water biological swimming pool with a separate plant-filled pool. A waterfall connects the 2 pools. There are a number of outbuildings which have been left externally in their original condition. All electrical wires serving the house have been buried. To the back of the house is a large hazel-nut grove with long arched paths formed by the trees. The property has a wooded driveway (no tarmac) of approximately 250 metres which leads onto a very small road (with minimal traffic). The majority of the large field adjacent to the house has wooden fencing which is home to our 2 very well-behaved horses who would be willing to take part in any shoot! The region About 500 metres from the house is the village of Priero which has many streets with unspoilt mediaeval architecture, an arched main street and a large church plus an imposing tower which dominates the village. The nearest town, Ceva, is 4km away and again has mediaeval architecture and a large arched main street as well as a large attractive square. 3km from the house is the hill-top village of Sale San Giovanni which has a large manor-house and amazing views over the countryside. Logistics The house is less than 10 minutes from the Ceva exit of the A6 motorway and is approximately 1 hour south of the Turin airport and 1 hour 45 minutes from Nice airport. There is plenty of parking at and near the property for all production vehicles and the access roads are big enough to allow entry to the house by a lorry the size of a 53 seater coach. There are a number of hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation within easy access of the house. Other information The weather in the region is mainly hot and dry in the summer. In the winter, particularly in the months of January to March, there is regularly a covering of snow. The house is available for renting during all periods of the year. We live within 1 hour 30 minutes of the house and can be available to assist (we speak fluent Italian). If required, we can also scout for other locations in the region. The house has a three phase electricity supply.
