Star Wars: The Force Awakens Ticket Pre-Order Date Revealed
After pouring over all the official announcements and rampant rumors about J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens for years, there isn’t much fans can do now other than wait. In a little over three months’ time (as of this writing), the beloved saga’s seventh episode will finally hit theaters, ushering in a new era of Star Wars on film.
Obviously, the movie is expected to make a pretty penny at the box office during the holiday season, and tickets for The Force Awakens will be in high demand this December. As such, some will try to get a jump start and pre-order their ticket so they’re guaranteed a seat for opening weekend. Now, moviegoers may know when they’ll be able to do that.
FullOfSith (hat tip to /Film) is reporting that Episode VII tickets will go on sale October 19. As of now, the only theater chains listed as participating are Century and Cinemark, but it is believed their competitors will soon follow suit (so they do not miss out on the revenue).
Some may question the legitimacy of this development, but there appears to be some kind of truth to it. On the official IMAX website, it clearly states that Force Awakens tickets are predicted to be made available in late October. That certainly plays in line with the proposed October 19 date, but we’ll have to wait for official confirmation from Lucasfilm.
If this turns out to be true, it means that tickets will go on sale just under two months before the film’s U.S. premiere. That may seem a touch extreme (Phantom Menace tickets went on sale a week before its release), but there is a precedent for this. Earlier this month, the James Bond film Spectre had tickets go on pre-order, and that doesn’t come out until this November. Whenever a hotly anticipated project like Star Wars is hitting multiplexes, the theaters like to be prepared ahead of time.
The original FullOfSith report also says that “odds seem decent” for the third Force Awakens trailer to be released around October 19, in order to help push the ticket sales. At San Diego Comic-Con 2015, it was confirmed that a new preview would not debut until the fall, so the safe money would be on fans getting a new look at Abrams’ film next month. Some may say at this point a third trailer is unnecessary, but Lucasfilm will most likely want to do something to commemorate an event like tickets going on pre-order. This would also seem like the best time to finally unveil an official synopsis and let people know what the movie is about.
It can be argued that early tickets for The Force Awakens are going to be a hotter item for fans than early tickets for Episode I. The prequel trilogy launched in 1999, well before the age of social media and instant reactions. In today’s spoiler-wary culture, everyone with even a passing interest in the next Star Wars movie is going to want to be among the first to see it, so they don’t have to live in fear of surfing the Internet. Whether that element helps it break the Jurassic World opening weekend record or not, there’s going to be a lot of money made with the pre-sale.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens well see theatrical release December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to see theatrical release in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
